``Kristallen'' is one of the most lively chess clubs (SK=schackklubb, chess club) in the Stockholm chess district, with about 60 players each club night (Thursdays 6.30 pm, August-May) in Garbosalen, Katarina Södra Skola,
Katarina Bangata 41, Södermalm, Stockholm.

Kristallens SK is very much more a club for the masses, rather than for the elite, and has always put its "feeling" and its juniors before making top level results. The club has more than 100 grown-ups and some 30 junior members. Six teams play in the national leagues, with the first team in Division I. Four teams play in the Stockholm Team Championship where our first team ended in second place in the "Elite Division" 2003/2004. In addition to our (from time to time!) strong juniors, our main claim to fame is our ladies team which is the strongest in the Nordic countries and took 7th place in the European Club Cup 2006.

The name Kristallen (lit. ``the Crystal'') comes from a building block on Södermalm (near the church Sofia, South City Centre) where the club was founded in 1931 by half-a-dozen young players. (Thus we're genuinely a club for the local neighbourhood, even though we no longer enforce the original requirement that 2/3 of the members have to live in the Kristallen block!)
Each year a special tournament for senior players (60+) is arranged in honour of Gösta Westerholm, the last of the club's "Founding Fathers" who passed away in January 2000 after having been a leading member of the club for almost 70 years, and - quite importantly! - still brewed the coffee every club night even when he was well into his nineties.
